Overview

Novellino, nestled on 12 Barrack Street in Hobart, is a charming Italian restaurant that invites diners to enjoy authentic, homemade dishes crafted with care. The restaurant boasts a modest but thoughtfully curated menu, emphasizing classic Italian flavors with a special touch. Its reputation is built on quality ingredients, such as Italian flour used in their focaccia, which many patrons have hailed as exceptional.

The highlight of Novellino lies in its commitment to tradition and hospitality. Diners often mention the deep-dish pizzas, featuring creative toppings like pumpkin, and fresh, flavorful plates such as gnocchi paired with sardines on toast. Meatballs, lasagne, and vegetarian options add variety, making it a solid choice for a range of tastes. The experience goes beyond the food; the owner’s warm, welcoming manner evokes the feeling of being a guest in a true Italian home, enhancing the charm of this local gem.

While the menu is intentionally small, this focus allows for high-quality preparation and a cozy dining atmosphere. Some visitors noted the absence of an online menu and seating allocation comfort, like window seats, but the attentive service and intimate setting compensate well. The space feels unpretentious yet inviting, perfect for both casual lunches and special dinners, including their intriguing regular dinner parties described as an extension of the chef’s living room.

Novellino appeals to food lovers who appreciate genuine Italian cuisine in a relaxed environment, whether they are locals or travelers seeking an authentic taste of Italy in Tasmania. Its blend of homemade dishes, friendly service, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a noteworthy addition to Hobart’s vibrant food scene.

The food was good, clean homemade food. Menu is quite small but worked for us as we had one vegetarian option. It would have been nice if we could have viewed the menu prior to coming on their website, but it isn't available to view. We reserved the table before coming and were hoping for window table. But it was given to walk ins.

This is a delicious discovery! We happened to walk past and it was open for lunch and we had two of the vegetarian focaccia. From overhearing other customers, they appear to have a lot of repeat business, always an excellent sign. Very friendly service and professional hospitality. The owner is delightful, a classic Italian host who treats his customers like guests in his home. We will definitely be back to this gem.

Had the meatballs and focaccia with the rocket salad. It was delicious and reasonably priced for a dine-in lunch. My companions has the lasagne which they were very happy with.

Unexpected little gem, when you first walk in it looks like they have a few basic takeaway items but past their display, there is seating available with great pasta options and some great specials! Enjoyed a plate of their gnocchi and sardines on toast, very fresh and flavourful! Would definitely go back!
